Juvenile Fiction

. . . and the secret thing . . .

By Dallin S. Durfee

The person was a young person. Although the person was a good person, due to circumstances beyond their control, they were unpopular and did poorly at school. The person was very sad most of the time.

Then, one day, another person told the young person that they had super and/or magical powers. The person was confused at first, but then they realized that many things that had happened to them made sense in light of their super and/or magical powers that they had not, until now, realized that they had.

The person went with the other person to a school or other place of instruction where people like the person were trained to use their super and/or magical powers. The person was very happy to find other people like them, but even more happy to find that they had greater powers and/or importance than the other young people at the school or other place of instruction. In fact, they found that they were marked or selected and/or were a prince or demigod or other person of importance.

For the first time in the person’s life, they made friends. Some were of the same gender as the person, but one in particular was of the opposite gender. At the time, the person didn’t pay any heed to the person’s different gender, but it will become more important in sequels to Juvenile Fiction.

The adult people at the school or other place of instruction were very serious. The person soon came to realize the reason for this. A very bad person was trying to make a bad thing happen. Unfortunately, the adult people were too prideful and frightened to defeat the bad person. The adult people would not listen to the obviously crucial information gathered by and conclusions drawn by the person and their friends. The person realized that only they and their idiot friends could defeat the bad person.

The person and their idiot friends spent a lot of time observing things and trying to unravel the history and plans of the bad person. This was all very entertaining, but pointless, since in the end they would simply fight the bad person with their super and/or magical powers. But in the mean time they met an adult person who was not like the other adult persons. In fact this adult person was very frustrated with the pride and fear of the other adult people. This adult person’s skill would be invaluable in defeating the bad person. Also, they became friends with several powerful yet quaint super and/or magical and/or technological creatures, probably a giant dog, a flying horse, or, if Juvenile Fiction was written in the 50’s or is otherwise totally awesome, a robot. These creatures would also be very useful.

One day, the person and his idiot friends came face to face with some of the servants of the bad person. They were hopelessly outmatched. But due to some amazing luck, the help of magical creatures and/or the timely arrival of a powerful adult, they narrowly survived the encounter. Some of the servants of the bad person were destroyed and/or captured, but the bad person got away so that there can be a sequel to Juvenile Fiction. This experience of being hopelessly outmatched and narrowly escaping with their lives taught the person and his idiot friends that they are invincible and don’t need to worry about anything ever.

One of the person’s idiot friends was hurt during the conflict. But just before the book ends, we find out that they are ok.

Now that Valentine's Day has passed, it's time to replace the sappy image with something more manly. This year it's a Bear fighting a Dalek (scroll down and take a look). This doesn't mean I don't love you anymore dear! It just means that the flowers wilted and needed to be replaced.

Here are some long-stem roses for my love, Memorie. I would have rendered you more, but they cost a lot of CPU cycles. Happy Valentines Day to a most loving and supporting wife.

Roses for Memorie.
